Spikomat wish to thank everyone who visted us at Hotelympia 2008 a few weeks ago. Having ventured south from our premises at Newark, we were inundated with alot of positive feedback and friendly faces.
We hope to see plenty of customers, old and new, at either RSVP in London or Food and Drink Expo at the NEC, Birmingham.
Product Development at Spikomat
Following on from the success of our KIDEI boats, Spikomat have been working on other shapes and sizes under the same range. Kidei packaging is a unique and versatile premium packaging option. Made from non-treated shavings of pine wood, they enhance your creative food presentation and add novelty to all occasions.
Hotelympia 2008 showcased the KIDEI cones and cups and was met with much positive feedback and comments. They really were a stand stopper!
The cones are available in three sizes ranging from 45x85mm, 65x125mm and 95x180mm. Suitable for anything for a canapé, sauce, nuts, olives, chocolates, a trio of deserts, noodles, fish and chips, tortilla wraps or sticky rice. The choice is endless and up to your creativity. The cups are available in two sizes, 45x45mm and 60x60mm. Ideal for food presentation they are an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a plastic display container.
Although disposable, the KIDEI range are re-cyclable and bio-degradable and altogether a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic.

Sustainable Products for Catering
More and more consumers are becoming aware of choosing Sustainable products. The public prefers sustainable products and will pay somewhat more for them than conventional products. They have cheaper raw materials, less liability, fewer regulatory constraints, and faster product time to market. Sustainable products have more value than like – for – like conventional products on the market.
At Spikomat, we are increasingly been asked for as much literature as possible to give to our Catering, Hospitality and Events customers. They in turn can portray this to their consumer or end retailer. It seems that today, it’s not just the aesthetic creations that are important, but the environmental concerns as well.
Sustainability is defined by Brundtland as 'meeting the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs'. But you may be wondering how Catering and Hospitality events can take this into account. Two simple ways are as follows:
Choose your materials carefully. The majority of our products are made from Bamboo. It is a highly renewable alternative to timber because it is a grass, grows incredibly fast and never needs replanting and offers vital economic and ecological benefits to the lives of millions of people around the world. Bamboo is an important and plentiful non-timber, non-petroleum resource. When made from non-treated Birchwood or Bamboo it means that, even though disposable, products are easily re-cycled, not classed as resource intensive to manufacture and aren’t toxic when broken down.
Research the source as much as possible. Our source in China does their up-most to consider the economic, social and environmental issues surrounding the products and used raw materials, and they supply us with certificates to satisfy this. Spikomat have been assured by a UK third party organization that our certificates are the most assurance that we can get at this present time, as a means of guaranteeing that products come from legal and sustainable resources. When buying products or wooden utensils, customers should look for FSC certification, PEFC certification, Ethical Audits symbols and Sustainable Declarations. Bamboo for Innovative Catering
Spikomat have discovered the aesthetic and durable qualities of using Bamboo for the majority of our speciality skewers to be used in Innovative Catering and Hospitality events. But you may be thinking it isn't very environmentally friendly. You could be wrong.
Bamboo is a highly renewable alternative to timber because don't forget it's not a wood, but a species of grass, so it grows incredibly fast - and never needs replanting therefore reducing our reliance on valued timber as well as being a vital aid to water and land conversation efforts around the world. Bamboo offers vital economic and ecological benefits to the lives of millions of people.
Apart from the sustainable situation, it also absorbs little moisture minimizing shrinking, swelling and warping and is naturally stain resistant. It actually sometimes costs less compared to like-for-like products made out of Birchwood.
There has been much press about recently with regards to Catering and Events going “Greener”. RSVP magazine this month featured a few editorials regarding this topic and makes a very interesting read surrounding sustainable resources and environmentally friendly packaging.
